Send Me: How to be a servant in ministry

Post by: Jamie Begley

Some people find it easy to find their place in ministry. Maybe they sing like a bird, the worship team is their place. Maybe they are really good at showing love to strangers, outreach is a perfect fit for them. But for some of us it’s not so easy to find the hole we’re supposed to fill.

Many people can’t see past the “pulpit ministries.” Whether it’s singing, or preaching, or taking up offering, if it doesn’t involve being on stage it doesn’t exist. Truly, that’s the exact opposite of what a ministry runs on. We love our worship team and pastor, but being on stage is only about 20% of what keeps this ministry going. From the children’s church to the cleaning team and everyone in between there are so many opportunities for you to be able to serve. If you’re asking yourself “what works can I do?” Here are a few ideas!

First, you could pray for all the churches widows and children without parents. James 1:27 sets this precedent. The church (not just within the 4 walls) is supposed to look out for the orphans and widows. One of the best ways to do this is by covering them in prayer. Maybe you could find a place on the prayer team. This group helps make sure no one has to pray alone. Another way to help is by getting to work on everyone and everything you prayed about. One way to do that is by joining the outreach ministry. The outreach center is a way for the church to help provide the physical needs of our community. If you want to help love people back to life these ministries are the place for you!

Second, be involved in your church and community. In the Christian walk it is imperative that we become connected to fellow believers. Acts 5:42 shows us how the apostles went about connecting with others. They taught in the temple and then went to different houses to talk about Jesus. We, in a way, mimic this standard with small groups. These groups all come together for worship on Sunday, but on Wednesday break out to learn and discuss scripture more in depth. By connecting in these groups you create a network of people who you can trust and turn to. There’s nothing better than having friends who you know are praying for you. If you aren’t part of a small group I urge you to join one!

Ultimately the goal should be to do all you can to help others with their needs and their need for Christ. There is no small job in the ministry. When any part is suffering the whole church suffers. So find a place to be involved! Cleaning, cooking, nursery, you may be the missing piece we’ve been looking for! By getting involved you’re not only contributing to our ministry, you’re also creating your own ministry. We’re so thankful for every person who plays a role in the church, and we hope to add you to the list soon!

As we close, pray this prayer with me. Lord, please give me a genuine heart for the needs and souls of others. Help me to find my place to serve you and contribute to the ministry. Help me to never let myself think these works are earning my salvation, but to serve out of love for you. I thank you for the salvation you already earned on my behalf, and for the sacrifice you made for me. I love you, and I praise you. In Jesus name, Amen.
